Modular Sofa Visualization – Fabric & Material Variations

Concept / Idea
This project focused on the photorealistic visualization of a modular sofa system, developed for material testing and product catalog presentation.
The client provided a base 3D model (originally in 3ds Max) to be reworked, softened, and rendered in a clean studio environment.
The main goal was to simulate various upholstery materials — corduroy, microfiber, and leather — under uniform lighting conditions to evaluate how each texture interacts with light and form.
Objectives
- Recreate and refine the existing sofa model for accurate tufting, proportions, and softness.
- Test and visualize multiple material types and color options in a consistent studio setup.
- Highlight fabric realism, stitching details, and surface depth through high-quality rendering.
- Produce ready-to-use visuals for design review and marketing applications.

Process
The workflow combined 3ds Max, SketchUp, V-Ray, and Adobe Photoshop for final post-production.
Workflow summary:
- Imported and optimized the client’s sofa model for clean geometry and accurate smoothing.
- Added tufting depth variations to test two forms:
- Soft plush surface without tufting (minimal seams)
- Deep tufting with pillow-like definition
- Simulated organic deformation to increase cushion softness and realism.
- Designed a neutral white studio environment with physically balanced lighting.
- Applied PBR materials replicating the tactile response of:
- Corduroy – soft ribbed fabric with directional highlights.
- Microfiber – matte texture with subtle scatter and soft diffuse shadows.
- Leather – semi-gloss surface with fine bump and realistic grain.
- Rendered multiple material and color combinations with soft reflections for catalog presentation.

Outcome / Key Features
- Three distinct material visualizations showcasing texture and lighting response.
- Refined sofa geometry for manufacturing-level presentation.
- High-resolution renders with accurate color, reflection, and shadow balance.
- Client-approved results used for fabric sampling and promotional imagery.
Tools
- Modeling: 3ds Max, SketchUp
- Rendering: V-Ray
- Post-Production: Adobe Photoshop

Visuals
- Corduroy version – natural fiber texture, tactile softness emphasized.
- Microfiber version – elegant matte surface with fine light diffusion.
- Leather version – warm tone, defined highlights, and luxurious depth.
